The story sucks, don't play this game for the story. Different units had different abilities that are required for certain collectibles, but once I was done with them I usually went back to the unit with the most utility. Gameplay wise, the game is decent but it is still very basic. Each map/stage is fairly large and have a ton of collectibles/secrets, but once you've done everything there is not much incentive to go back. The levels themselves can be revisited at any time after completion and played as if they were open world maps. The game is your standard LEGO game that tasks you with playing through the levels and solving simple puzzles. I did not know what to expect since I haven't played a proper LEGO game, other than LEGO Dimensions, since the good ol' GameCube days, and I was somewhat let down since I remember those days of ol' very fondly.
