In the early 2000s 3D tech was advancing and we started to see a wave of "violent games" that were more than crude pixels jumped on a screen (even if they've all aged tremendously in retrospect), and Rockstar were right at the peak of mass media "video games are turning our kids into serial killers" criticism. Which also makes it an interesting product of its time. Because, I guess, it is disposable gratuity, but presents this self indulgent fetishism as invasive, suffocating, and just wrong. Warts and all, Manhunt is one of the most inventive games to embellish virtual violence in a way that layers the moment-to-moment feel and play with dread and unpleasantness instead of disposable gratuity. And while in theory that'd be entirely possible, a part of me feels that the PS2-era tech limits add to the ambiguity of the gore, and the nightmarish, dreamy tone the whole game has going for it. I don't really know if a remake would serve it well, unless it retained the grimy, unpleasant, crude aesthetic and nature of the original. It's one of the most criminally underappreciated stealth/horror titles ever, in my opinion.

I just recently replayed it on my PS2 and it's still such a fun game. It's a shame they don't wanna be involved in another scandal like they did with the original release, mostly the media blamed Rockstar's title on the murder of Stefan Pakeerah to tarnish their reputation when it had nothing to do with it, and also his parents wanted to get indemnized to get a quick buck.Īlso a quick mention to Lionel Starkweather, voiced brilliantly by Brian Cox, a sadistic snuff film director who constantly reacts to Cash's kills in a perverse way with that characteristic voice. I still find the game's aesthetics, sound design and atmosphere so great, I'd love if Rockstar could remake or remaster this important game for the history of survival horror genre, because it inspired many other games after it, most notably The Last of Us and some others I can't remind now.
